New Zealand has a small population and most of its residents are native speakers of English. Learning English in the frames of the ESOL program in New Zealand, especially in South Island, gives you the confidence to study, live and work almost anywhere in the world.
Our international student program includes some support services for non-English speaking students.
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses are offered in all our accredited public schools that accept international students. Students can earn credits in all ESOL courses.
If your English is at a low level, the school will provide you with an Intensive ESOL course.
Please note that the information on this page is only for regular international students studying in public schools in South Island of New Zealand. Students taking temporary or short-term study courses do not need to undergo an additional English course before the course begins. The school will consider whether you need to take an additional English course or not.
Excellent English skills will help you to successfully enter high quality high schools and universities. English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Course taught by our specially trained teachers will give you a good start.
Intensive courses are meant to improve your English skills in a short time. You will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in English so that you can study your course later.
The formal course will start at the same time as the intensive English course. If your English ability is low, the International director will recommend you to increase the proportion of English intensive courses in your initial course selection.
Students study English (ESOL) combined with the following subjects:
• Science
• History
• Geography
• Art
• Music
As your English skills improve, the number of formal courses will gradually increase, ESOL course will still be one of the subjects you study, and you will also have the opportunity to get more language support to ensure your academic success. Visiting New Zealand's famous attractions and museums will also help you learn about New Zealand’s culture.
Once you start your formal course, your school will continue to teach you English:
• Formal courses are offered to students who learn English as a second language.
• Tutoring, homework clubs, lunchtime and after-school English classes
Many schools offer courses specifically English as a second language for students to meet their needs in formal courses.
Our school regularly or irregularly organizes multicultural education activities to support learning English as a second language. In the classroom, in the library, and even in the cafeteria, club seniors help individual or small groups of international students learn about different cultural backgrounds and experiences and solve language problems in their studies.
